I went to play a DVD on Vista the other day to be stopped by both Windows Media Player 11 and Windows Media Center as this was Home Premium. Windows Media Player gave me the following error: "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card." Great I thought, Vista is so well protected it won't even let me play DVDs on my "insecure" laptop. Next I tried Windows Media Center to get some error about failing to have the correct resolution and cable connection. I thought this was odd and had a search around. Turns out Windows Vista refuses to play DVDs from region free firmware DVD drives. Of course I suddenly remembered tweaking my drive many moons ago to make it region free. The utility I used for my laptop DVD drive, a Sony one, was LtnRPC. This program allows you to unlock your drive, if compatible, change the region and reset various counters, very useful but if you set it to region 0 Vista will start coughing up hairballs. I had to reset the drive to my usual region 2 and Vista was pacified. DVDs played again. Just a tip to any others that have had this problem.
