multiple domain endings 2009/04/05 14:00 Karma: 0
Hi

Quick question. My company website can be reached over three domains (.com .co.uk and .de)

I only have one folder on my server and all three domains point to this folder. In Google Analytics I have a code for each domain, but your tool only allows me to add one code. Is there any way I can track all three domains?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Kind regards
Zweibel

PS. I'm using Joomla 1.5

Firstly I'd advice redirecting all domains to one, for simplicity and it makes sure links to your site all go to one place. However you have two options, use my old 2.1.3 version that has support for multiple accounts, that will let you put all 3 codes in however this means all your results will be triplicated. I believe it is possible to set up Google Analytics with multiple domains all pointing to one ID however I haven't tried this.

Thank you very much for your fast response.
Yes, I was reading about multiple domains in Google Analytics, but the solution Google offers would only work if really had three separate domains. By adding some coding and linking the domains I could somehow use only one tracking code.

My problem is that I basically only have one website, but have the .de .com and .co.uk point to the same folder.

I think you are right, I will simply redirect the .co.uk and .de to my .com.
....still have to find out how that works, but I hope that's not too difficult.

Thanks for your help.

Search for DNS redirect and you should be able to do it relatively easily, I think it might need CNAMEs or similar.

Well, I searched for DNS redirect and understand what needs doing, but I have the feeling I have already done this.

As I said, I have these three domains, and instead of having individual folders for each of domain, I have simply got one folder. When setting up the domains with my hosting provider, I was asked to specify the folder which the domain should access. In my case I specified the same folder for all the domains. So if I now access Joomla and make a change, the change is valid for any domain.
I guess this is what you mean by redirecting, right?

If this is the case, I would image that although I only have one tracking code (for the .com address), Google is tracking all domains because all domains access one and the same folder?

Do you think this is correct?
Sorry to bother you with this, but in the Google Analytics forum nobody has replied to any of my questions.
Thanks

Just read up on the limitations of CNAME, appears they can only be done for subdomains so I suggest you point your two domains, the .co.uk and the .de to a separate folder and in that place a file called index.php with the following code in it:

<?php
header( 'Location: http://www.yoursite.com/' ) ;
?>

Thank you. I did what you said and when I know enter my .de or .co.uk address I am redirected to the .com address (that's the address shown in the address bar).

Unfortunately, there's no way I can check whether Goolge Analytics is now tracking all my domains with the single account I have for the .com address.

Just to make sure I understand this correctly: according to your opinion, this single Google Analytics account I have for the .com address only should now also be tracking the traffic to the .de and .co.uk domains, alhtough they are redirected to the .com address.

Once again, thanks for all your help.
